Hydross 2, GBU 0

We made great progress on Hydross last night. It was our second night of attempts, 7 attempts each night, and we got him to 16% on the last try. Everyone in the raid seemed to be pleased to get so close on the second night. I wasn’t one of them.

I am pleased that we learned a lot. I am pleased that I learned a lot. But the last wipe at 16% was because I was a split second too late with my shield slam in a transition to Frost phase from Nature phase. The horror! I’m trying to smack the boss and instead of targeting me he targets a healer on the other side. 4 adds turn into 8 adds. Game over.

In general, the only hard part of the fight is handling the transistions. Our two druid tanks had a much easier time with the adds this time by using most of their epic gear and just a few resist items instead of tons of resist items like the previous night. All of our wipes were caused by blown transitions. Many of those were DPS leaving dots, a shaman totem or just not stopping dps during the transition. I think we finally got all that behind us. But the other wipes during the transitions were because I just couldn’t grab aggo. I know some were because I thought Hydross would switch to Frost immediately after crossing the line. I was shield slamming, devestating, etc. too early while he was still nature. So by the end of the raid I had figured out to wait for him to turn blue. But if I didn’t get that shield slam on him the split second he turned blue he bolted over to a healer on the other side of the line and it was all over.

Ah well. He’ll be dropped the next time we go in there. I wish I didn’t have to wait until Tuesday (next planned SSC run) to redeem myself though.

  1. Ahh, don’t fret about it. The Nature > Frost transition by far the worst. Like you said, being a split second late can turn into a wipe, whereas on the other transition, Hydross getting loose doesn’t result in any more adds.

I dunno if you play with sound, but when he speaks is an aural indicator of the transition. Not sure what he says going into the frost phase, but he says “AHH THE POISON” when going into the nature phase.

Keep at it, you’ll definitely feel awesome once he goes down about tanking a really hard challenge for warriors 🙂

  2. I think a lot of the strats out there for Hydross are really old and probably still talk about using speed pots or lesser invisibility pots to engage this guy. But a while ago (patch 2.2 maybe) they shrank his aggro radius so none of that is necessary anymore. You can hug the wall and go past the transition line and then simply run over to him without worrying about an early transition on the pull.

  3. Hehe, the guildies keep giving me invis potions and I’ve got 2 stacks of them now. Even if it isn’t necessary it is still fun being an invisible tank. Now on the other hand, those transitions from nature back to frost . . .

Thanks for the tip the other night Rochelle.

Spiedel, I play with the sound on but kind of low. I’ll turn up the sound next time and see if that helps.
