Gius goes from holy to shadow

Filed under: Uncategorized — tankette @ 4:39 pm

I’ve heard over and over of the greatness of shadow priests in raids and the laments about how our guild really needs one. At the same time, we have had 3 new holy priests join our guild in the last couple weeks. So I am going to try out being a shadow priest and see how it goes.

I have no clue how to play or gear a shadow priest so this will take some work. Here’s the givens:

Gius is an alt. Even if he was ready for the big time my guild is likely to need me on Tankette as MT for progression raids.

I don’t want to do a gazillion dailies to fund big purchases on equipment. Maybe 500g a week is all I want to spend. I want to have about 10K gold in the bank when WoTLK starts.

I want to be able to re-spec to healing if needed so I don’t want to switch tailoring from mooncloth to shadow. Hence, no frozen shadow weave set. I may reconsider this decision if really pressed.

I’ve never played as shadow spec so I don’t know spell rotations, how to do the mana regen thing for the raid, etc. I started last night by doing a couple dailies on the Isle.

Questions:

Has anyone converted from holy to shadow that can give me the pitfalls to watch out for?

What does it take to switch tailoring specialty from mooncloth to shadow or vice versa?

Are there good gearing options besides the Frozen Shadowweave?

What resources are available on the web to learn more about gearing and spell rotations besides Blizz forums?

As always, I appreciate any help or comments I can get. You can look up Gius on the armory if you wish. He’s on the Moonrunner server. I have already re-specced based on one I found but I have no idea if it is good. I’m still wearing all my healing gear as it at least gives me some starting spell damage and i don’t have much other gear.

I intend to do regulary updates on this new journey and share my fun.

  1. If it is not too unseemly, I’ll suggest checking out http://mostlykaldorei.com/a-raiding-shadow-priests-primer/. I wrote that to sum up a lot of the things you seem to be looking for. The only thing I can’t help with is the holy to shadow switch- the period of time I raided MC as a healer I was discipline spec.

  2. My two favorite resources: Shadow Priest Raiding Gear Guide and A Dwarf Priest.

Spell rotation is pretty simple. Keep VT and SW:P up ALL the time. Hit SW:D and MB as soon as the cooldowns are up. Mindflay in between. VE is situational – it gives mad healing (useful for SW:D) but also generates mad threat.

For gearing, Frozen Shadowweave >>> everything else pre-Tier 6. You want to go for +spell damage. Crit is okay, but is only somewhat helpful. You want to make sure you’re hit capped (only 76 with 5/5 Shadow Focus; take a point or 2 out if you have a lot of +hit gear), then don’t worry about spell hit.

    Welcomes ta the dark side!

  3. Oh, and to switch tailoring specialties you talk to one of the shadocloth trainer i Shat and pay 100? 150? gp – something like that.

  4. It takes 150g to un-spec Mooncloth plus 30g or so to pick up shadoweave and learn its patterns (you forget the spec patters each time, but you only need them to make items). Some good non-raiding cloth DPS gear is:

    – Kara boots, robe, pants, hat, T4 gloves, ring
    – PvP weapon, shoulders and cuffs, mayebe belt or boots.
    – New badge robe, boots, gloves, ring.
    – Buy spellstrike head and pants (or use whitemend)
    – Buy belt of blasting, maybe boots also
    – Make Mantle of nimble Thought (or just use Swiftheal)
    – Buy Bracers f nimble thought (or maybe Swiftheal)

  5. Frozen shadowweave is kickass.

My girlfriend’s a shadowpriest, and she still wears it halfway through the tier 6 content.

  6. Thanks for all the feedback an links. All I have done as shadow so far is to do dailies but I am enjoying it. I got my 3 frozen shadowweave pieces yesterday and I am planning on getting the belt of blasting, spellstrike hood and spellstrike pants this week. Probably start doing Kara runs after that.
