Raid Successes, 5 Man Frustration

Filed under: Uncategorized — tankette @ 5:17 pm

As soon as I logged on the regular OT in our raid linked his latest prize: The Red Sword of Courage http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37401Β . I have tried to stay better geared than him and have been successful at it so far. So him getting the primo tanking sword before me stung a little bit.

Then we went raiding. 10 man Chamber of Aspects is now too easy after downing all the mini-bosses first. We will leave one up next time. Then we took the same group to do the Vault in Wintergrasp. Again, easy. So we got a 25 man going for the Vault. The only hard part was getting 25 people. We got about 16 or 17 in our guild and then brought in some other players from out of guild. We dropped the boss with plenty of time to spare.

I got two more epics from those runs. I got the T7 hands off Sartharion and T7 legs from the Vault. While it is great to get more of my T7 set, they are weak in defense compared to the items I already had. I spent quite some time messing with gems and enchants to stay crit immune. Even with that I have to switch out my trinkets for extra defense and sacrificing 111 Stam.

Then to Utgarde Pinnacle. We had a pretty strong hunter, so/so DK, so/so Ehance Shammy and a pretty good Resto Shammy on heals. We slaughtered everything with ease until we got to the gauntlet. Fail is the only word to describe it. At least 10 wipes before we gave up. I could hold aggro on a sea of mobs but there would always be a caster or spear thrower I couldn’t find that would kill the healer in a few seconds. We tried several strategies but had the same result every time. /hang head in shame

I’m tempted to try a speed potion to get down the gauntlet faster. Or maybe I could just use an invisibility potion to get all the way to the end before the fight gets started. I think replacing the DK with another ranged dps with AOE would help too. Maybe a second hunter would be best. And a Priest healer may have a better chance of surviving than a Shammy since the Priest can use Fade, Shield himself and us fear if all else fails.

I went from a good tank that successfully MT’ed 3 raids to FAIL on a 5 man. I would just forget about doing this heroic if it weren’t the home of the best tanking sword.

  1. Haha, totally agree. Just today I posted about how much I love Utgarde pinnacle, and what a bummer the gauntlet is. The way to tank it is: Run as far as you can, pick up as many mobs as possible (should be about 12-14) and have them AoEd.

Do the same thing again with all remaining mobs (this can get tricky, so best is to watch out for having TC & Demo Shout available at the end of group #1), then have everyone cuddle in the small room where the adds spawn.

It’s a messy, ugly event and if only one of your group screws up, you’re gonna wipe and nothing but. And as soon as I loot that sword the instance is never, ever going to see me again, for the Skadi gauntlet that is.

    Good luck πŸ™‚

  2. I pull 2-3 groups and marking any casters ASAP as they tend to wail on the healer while the dps is burning the another target.

If anything cast spell reflect whenever you see a caster wailing on your healer and your charge/shield bash is on cooldown.

Take your time, like I said grab at least 2 packs, prolly around 4-6 mobs. then start moving forward. Have someone in vent call out which side to avoid, preferably a dpser.

1 man dieng on a 25man is different from 1 man dieng on a 5man. The responsibilities are a little bit bigger.

  3. I know a few groups feel like you have to wait for Skadi to ‘lift off.’ For me, in both runs where the gauntlet was flawless, I would prep my group prior to entering the gauntlet, and when I ran in, would just run past Skadi down the hall. I could pick up every spawned enemy (not including the 3 end ones, which we killed separately) with one TC and Shockwave. Our healer (holy pally) would call out the frost sides, and then after some AE (we did have a mage) we were left with a few extra spawns and the end group, easy mode!

Just takes some out of the box thinking, same with any heroics imo. In many where we’ve tried for the achievements (that red-proto drake is calling me!) we’ve wiped dozens of times trying more and more crazy ideas πŸ˜›

  4. you can also start the event, run out and wait it to reset..then run all the way to the end where the harpoons are and kill all mobs at once πŸ™‚

Btw that’s also the way to do the achievement πŸ˜‰

  6. We have been using the resets for Skadi. I think I’ve killed King Yirmiron at least 7 times now and still no sword.
