Voidreaver, something different

Filed under: Uncategorized — tankette @ 12:49 pm

Our guild is getting stronger. We are still starting late while trying to find 25 raiders. But, last night we were only about 15 minutes late getting started which was a big improvement. We only had 24 people when we got started but that was ok.

For the first time since I joined the guild back in March we were headed for Tempest Keep – The Eye. Our mission was to pay Mr. Voidreaver and unfriendly visit.

I can’t express enough how great a job our raid leader did. He must have spent a long time researching all the pulls as well as the actual boss fight. Out march through The Eye was slow but steady. We had a few mis-timed pulls where we got 2 groups at a time so we had a couple wipes and a couple times at the beginning where those of us that were alive ran out of the instance.

Almost 2 hours later we were ready for the boss fight. Sure, that’s a long time to get to a boss but it was all brand new to us. I was having a great time seeing new content.

I got things started with the first attempt. I did a poor job getting Voidreaver centered in the room. I did a lot of moving around to finally get him there. I’m not sure if that is what caused all the raid deaths, probably, but we wiped at 90%.

The second attempt went much better. From my perspective, the fight is an aggro race for the tanks. We had myself, another warrior tank and a pally tank. The pally tank just had no chance to keep up on threat. The other warrior and I were leading the threat meters and everything was smooth. I kept pulling farther and farther ahead on threat and the second tank was getting slower. I think it was at about 50% when the mages over took him on threat. Apparently Voidreaver likes to switch to #2 on the threat meter because he took off from the center of the room and started smashing clothies into oblivion. At that point I had 100K more threat on Omen than anyone else in the room. We got him back into the center of the room and continued on. I think we still had about 18 of us alive. The second tank never got back to #2 on the threat meter. At around 25% Voidreaver again took off to smash clothies. I had nearly 170K more threat than anyone else. We got him back to the center but at that point there were only about 10 or so raiders left. We had control of the fight but at 10% the enrage was about to go off so we called it and ran to reset the fight. Voidreaver 2, GBU 0. But, 10% on the second attempt wasn’t bad.

The third attempt went just like the second for the first half of the raid. I purposely tried to slow down on building threat so the other warrior would have more rage. Somewhere around 75% I started my normal ability rotation and left him behind because the casters were starting to get close. At one point I called out in vent for one of the mages to slow down. He wasn’t happy about it. Lol, the raid leader told him to go bandage someone as something to do for a break. The hunters finaly kicked in with misdirects to help the other warrior keep up on threat. The warrior was also chugging rage potions. Slow and steady wins the race. The fight was all about watching Omen. Well, for me at least as a tank. Most of the raid was very busy dodging the arcane bombs. With the DPS’ers on a slightly held back pace we cut it close with the enrage timer. They all kicked it into high gear at the end and Voidreaver went down!!!! One night, 3 attempts and we got another new boss kill for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly!!

  1. Grats, sounds like you guys are on a roll lately.

I feel a bit bad for your OT, being an OT is really an ungrateful and tough task at times. It’s never easy to consistently build threat if you don’t have the unlimited rage you have from having a raid boss hit you.

  2. No doubt, being OT can be far more difficult than MT, especially when you are being rage starved. The guy can’t get Kings Defender or Mallet of Tides to drop so he’s still using his Sun Eater. That and less hit and less expertise are really hurting his threat.

  3. Your pally tank sucks, he should have no problem in this fight, its beautifully designed for him sustaining aggro and he can wear threat gear if he wants to.

Let the Pally strap on threat gear (go crushable, it doesn’t matter, at lower gear levels stay uncrittable), and let him open the pull. Typically a Tankadin will hold for 20-100% of the fight, and easily build their threat back up to the level of the others.

VR drops your aggro when he knocks you back, normally 25% of your threat (thus why you use a solid first tank to get an umbrella of threat for the fight). DPS should stay below the 2nd Tank at least to maintain their safety, otherwise as you saw he kills people :P.

  4. Oh, and VR has no offtank, but rather 3 main tanks who should swap positions at the top of the table.

We have tried having OTs run into the balls to get more rage / mana, seemed ok 😛

  6. Ya, our pally tank is a work in progress. He’s getting geared but he still needs help with what he’s doing. I don’t know squat about pally tanks to help him.

  7. Congrats!

Void Reaver is a great fight to learn. You’ll get to see why when you take on Gurtogg Bloodboil 🙂

  9. If he needs any advice Maintankadin is the resource to check, or he can drop me an email, not the best pally tank in the world (well I might be but there doesn’t seem to be a checker on quality anywhere on google :P), but I have experience in it.
